Honorees
Bob Blomberg
We would like to honor 6-time Commuters champion, Bob Blomberg, as seen here dressed in his Alameda Commuters Committee "greencoat". In 2001, Bob was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Northern California Golf Association, for his 30 years of stalwart play, great golf sportsmanship and for always behaving like a true gentleman. Bob's on-course demeanor and the way he related to his fellow competitors exemplified the true spirit of the dedicated amateur golfer.
Bob was a great ambassador for golf and for the Alameda Commuters Golf Tournament
Bob Blanchard
Bob is a lifetime resident of Alameda, a third generation Alamedan. Born in 1943 Bob stated playing golf at the age of 5 and still plays regularly and has in fact shot his age twice! He joined the Alameda Golf Club in 1963 and served two terms of President and has help build the club in his 59 years of service. He has volunteered his time to the Alameda Junior Golf Club for years and you will likely find him there most days.
In 1980 Bob was invited to join the Alameda Commuters Golf Committee. Bob grew up together with 6-time Commuters Champion Bob Blomberg and played many rounds with him over the years before Blomberg’s passing in 2013. Bob has been a strong pillar in the Commuters committee over the years and has dedicated his time to the promotion of the tournament, especially with the Senior and Super Senior divisions.
Jack Cummings
Jack Cummings and his family moved to Alameda in 1944 and at the age of nine, he was exposed to golf at the Alameda Municipal Golf Course. Virtually growing up on the links, in 1951 he won the East Bay Caddy crown and held an early record-breaking 71 card at Hayward Golf Links.
Jack attended Modesto Junior College and played on two consecutive state Junior College Champions, setting records that stood until the mid-1960s. He then attended San Jose State College, playing on the golf team for two years, playing in two NCAA golf championships in Ohio and Colorado. In July 1957, he was employed by Earl Fry as the assistant golf pro with the Alameda Golf Course.
While working with Tal Smith at the Claremont Country Club, Jack was named the new Golf Pro at the Alameda Golf Course taking over for the late Earl Fry and becoming a Full member of the PGA. Jack was in the golf business for more than 50 years at Alameda Golf Course, Claremont Country Club and North Star Golf Company, retiring in 2002. Jack was a former Life Member of the PGA of America, Honorary Life Member of Alameda Golf Club and Commuters Golf Committee
Norma Arnerich
The community will best remember Norma for her contributions to the game of golf. She was the first woman appointed to the Golf Commission and served from 1978 to 1986. She sat for three of those years as its chair. She helped create the Mif Albright Golf Course and in 1991 she played an instrumental role in creating the Alameda Junior Golf Program. Many of Alameda’s top young players have come through that program.
Norma was Alameda’s Woman of the Year in 1990. Twenty years later, she traveled to Monterey to receive the Pacific Women’s Golf Association’s Helen Lengfeld Award for her outstanding service to women’s golf.
